Procedure: Classroom Cleaning

Description of Procedure:
1. Empty the Pencil Sharpener into the Trash Can.
2. Empty Trash and replace the liner as necessary. Replace the liner at least once a week.
3. Clean the chalkboard/whiteboard an the tray with properly diluted neutral cleaner.
4. Dust all horizontal surfaces weekly.
5. Clean counter tops (desks and tabletops) with properly diluted disinfectant cleaner. Wipe the area immediately afterward to prevent streaks.
6. Inspect all windows to ensure that they are closed and locked.
7. Vacuum the carpeted area of the floor.
8. Dust mop all tiled areas. Move the desks aside and sweep beneath them. Sweep the debris into a pile and pick it up with the counter brush and dustpan.
9. Inspect the light fixtures and submit a work order for the lights that are not working.
10. Close and lock the classroom as you leave.
Note: Some teachers may not want the whiteboard/ blackboard cleaned each night. Respect the teacher’s wishes and arrange for a time when the board can be cleaned.

Procedure: Vacuuming
Frequency: Daily or as directed
Materials Required:

Description of Procedure:
1. Check the cord for cracks, breaks, or exposed wires. Inspect plug for loose or missing forks. Notify your supervisor immediately if the machine doesn’t work.
2. Make sure the brush height is properly set for the carpet that is going to be vacuumed..
3. Daily – Vacuum all traffic lanes and areas visible to occupants. Pick up all litter that may cause damage to the vacuum cleaner including paper clips, money, large pieces of paper, strings, and pebbles before vacuuming.
4. Weekly – use the angle broom to clean the edges of the baseboards, partitions, and fixtures.
5. Change the filter bag weekly or as needed.
6. Report any damage of the carpet or the vacuum or safety hazards you may find to you immediate supervisor.

Procedure: Damp Mopping
Frequency: Daily or as directed

Description of Procedure:
1. Dust mop the floor.
2. Pick up the debris with the counter brush and dust pan.
3. Post the “Wet Floor” signs in the area that to be cleaned for safety purposes.
4. Start mopping the floor in the far corner of the area to be mopped. Make sure the mop water solution is mixed properly with Neutral Cleaner. Work back across the area using a Figure 8 pattern with the mop. Do not overextend your reach. The normal reach for mopping is 3 feet to either side of the center of the body.
5. Rinse the mop frequently in the clean mop water.
6. Move to the next area to be mopped and repeat the procedure.
7. Change the mop water as needed as you work your way through the rooms or building.

Procedure: Dust Mopping

Description of Procedure:
1. Assemble all of the required equipment.
2. Push the dust mop down one side of the corridor. Return on the opposite side. Continue to move up and down the corridor overlapping the previous pass until the center of the corridor is reached. Push the material into a pile and pick it up with the dust pan and the counter brush
3. Classrooms - Start at the entrance of the classroom and move either clockwise or counterclockwise around the room. When you encounter a desk, move it aside and sweep underneath it.
4. Push the material into a pile and pick it up with the dustpan and the counter brush.
5. Remove the gum and any other sticky material with the putty knife and dispose of it with the swept material.
6. Stop to remove built up material on the dust mop by shaking it over the dust pile and remove the stubborn material by hand or vacuum.
7. Do not pass the dust mop over wet areas on the floor. This makes the dust mop very difficult to maneuver properly and creates a mess on the floor.

Description of Procedure:
1. Assemble all the required equipment.
2. Announce in a clear loud voice “ Custodian, is anyone in here?” before entering.
3. Place the “Wet Floor” sign at the entrance(s) of the restroom.
4. Fill all of the dispensers including the paper towels, toilet paper, soap, and feminine hygiene.
5. Remove the trash and replace the liner as required.
6. Flush all of the toilets and urinals.
7. Saturate the bowl swab with bowl cleaner and clean the urinals. Make sure you do not use bowl acid on the plumbing fixture. It will eat the metal.
8. Let the bowl cleaner set and move to the toilets.
9. Plunge the water level down with the bowl swab. Saturate the bowl swab with bowl cleaner and clean the inside of the bowl including under the rim.
10. Let the bowl cleaner stand and return to the urinals.
11. Flush the urinals and toilets to rinse off the bowl cleaner. Wash and disinfect the sinks and plumbing fixtures. Make sure you wash the sides and bottom.
12. Turn the water on in the sink and rinse the cleaning solution from the basin sides and fixtures.
13. Clean the mirrors with glass cleaner.
14. Wash and disinfect all of the fixtures
15. Dust op the floor and pick up the material with the dust pan and counter brush.
16. Wet mop the floors as described in SOP #3.
17. Spot clean the dispensers and clean you equipment.
18. Prepare work orders for any items needing repairs the custodial staff can not handle.

Procedure: Cleaning Walls
Frequency: As Needed
Materials Required:
Fox tail duster
Sponges
Wypall
Two buckets – one with a water/neutral cleaner solution, the other with clean water to rinse
Description of Procedure:
1. Assemble all the required equipment.
2. Remove all hanging items from the walls.
3. Move cabinets, bookcases and anything else blocking the work area.
4. Dust the walls to remove loose soils and cobwebs.
5. Use a wet sponge to wipe down the walls. NOTE: the sponge should not be dripping wet with the cleaning solution staring at the bottom of the wall and working up.
6. Use the abrasive side of the sponge to remove stubborn spots.
7. Rinse the wall with a wet (no dripping) Wypall. Use a side to side wiping motion, overlapping the last pass with each new pass.
8. Replace the furniture and hanging items.
9. Move to the next section of wall.

Procedure: Dusting
Frequency: Daily

Description of Procedure:
1. Assemble all the required equipment.
2. Begin with the high surfaces and work downward. Use the fox tail duster when a dust cloth is impractical.
3. When the high areas have been dusted, move to the desks. Dust back and forth until the desk is completed or the cloth gets too dirty to work with. If the cloth gets dirty, refold it and continue to dust.
4. Move objects on the desks and dust under them. Do not remove papers or projects, just move them aside and continue to dust.
5. Dust chairs starting from the top and working to the bottom.
6. Use a small wisk broom on upholstered furniture. Spot wisk as needed.
7. Use furniture polish as needed as per the instructions on the can.
8. Remove the gum and other stuck material from the bottom of the desks with the putty knife and place the material in the garbage can.

Procedure: Emptying trashcans
Frequency: Daily
Materials Required:
Custodians cart

Description of Procedure:
1. Assemble all the required equipment.
2. Begin by placing the custodial cart as close to the trash can as possible.
3. In classrooms, dump the trash can into the waste can on the Custodians Cart. Replace the can liner as necessary.
4. If the trashcan is dirty, spray the disinfectant cleaner into the can and wipe the can clean.
5. Pick up any litter that may be around the can.
6. When emptying cans larger than a classroom style, remove the liner completely and move it to the Dumpster. Make sure you lift the liner properly to avoid a back injury.
7. When replacing the liners, open the bag completely and extend it down to the bottom of the can. Turn the edges of the liner over the outside of the can to make sure it stays in place.
8. Do not push the trash in the can down with your hands. This is to prevent puncture injuries to your hands.
9. Replace the can to its’ original location when you have finished emptying it.

Procedure: Servicing Dispensers

Description of Procedure:
1. Paper Towel Dispensers
a. Open the dispenser and check the amount of paper towels remaining on the roll.
b. If it is less than one-thirds full, replace the roll with a new roll.
c. Close the paper towel dispenser and check to see if it operates properly.
d. If you have a problem, ask your supervisor for help.
2. Hand Soap Dispensers
a. Open the dispenser and check the level of the soap in the container.
b. If it is less than one-thirds full, replace the box with a new one.
c. Close the soap dispenser and check it to see if it operates properly.
d. If you have a problem, ask your supervisor for help.
3. Toilet Paper Dispenser
a. Most of our toilet paper dispensers are transparent. Look through the plastic to see how many rolls remain on the pegs.
b. Open the dispenser and replace any toilet paper rolls that are missing.
c. Close the dispenser and check to see if it operates properly.
d. If you have a problem, ask your supervisor for help.

Procedure: Cleaning chalkboards/Whiteboard cleaner
Frequency: Daily
Materials Required:
Wypalls
Two (2) Small buckets
Neutral Cleaner
Chalk board Cleaner
Whiteboard cleaner
Chalkboard cleaner
Description of Procedure:
1. Assemble all of the required equipment.
2. Fill one bucket with a solution of warm water and Neutral cleaner. Make sure to follow the mixing directions for mixing the neutral cleaner and water solution.
3. Fill the other bucket with plain, warm water to use as rinse water.
4. Remove the erasers from the tray to prevent them from getting wet.
5. Using the water/NC solution, wipe the board with a Wypall using a side-to-side motion to remove the writing and chalk dust. Make sure that you don’t remove writing that the teacher needs. Check with the teacher to see what needs to stay and what should be removed.
6. When you have finished wiping the board with the cleaning solution, use a second Wypall to rinse the board off with the warm water. Wipe the board dry with another Wypall using as little water as possible.
7. Whiteboard cleaner should only be used on a weekly basis. The cleaner will build up and ruin the whiteboard if it is used on a daily basis.
8. Chalkboard cleaner should be only used about every three to four months. It takes all of the chalk off the board and causes the chalk to “ghost” on the board. Do not let a teacher have a can to keep in their room.
9. Clean the erasers on the eraser-cleaning machine.
10. Replace the erasers after wiping the tray to remove water and chalk dust.

Procedure: Stripping and finishing floors
Frequency: annually (or as directed by the Custodial Supervisor)

Description of Procedure:
1. Assemble all of the required equipment.
2. Remove all of the furniture from the room and place it in the hall.
3. Mix the stripper solution as directed by the instructions on the container.
4. Apply the stripper with a mop to the ¼ of the room or work area, depending on the size of the room, furthest from the door.
5. Use the Doodlebug to remove the floor finish along the edges of the room that have had stripped applied to them. Allow the stripping solution time to work on the floor.
6. Use the floor machine and the black pads to remove the finish from the floor in the area that has had stripper applied to it.
7. After the solution has been worked throughout the area, use the wet vac to remove the residue from the floor.
8. Rinse the area immediately to pick up any stripper not removed with the wet vac.
9. Continue the procedure until the entire floor is complete.
10. After the floor has been completely stripped, apply clean water to rinse off any remaining residue.
11. Remove the rinse water with the wet vac and allow the room to air dry.
12. Apply the first coat of seal to the floor after it has completely dried. Run length-wise starting in the corner farthest from the door and work your way back to the door.
13. A second coat may be applied after the first coat has been allowed to dry. Apply this coat perpendicular to the first staring in the corner farthest from the door and working back to the door.
14. When the second coat of seal has dried, the first coat of finish may be applied in the same manner as the first seal coat.
15. A second finish coat may be applied when the first has dried. Apply it in the same manner as the second seal coat.
16. When the last coat of finish has dried, replace the furnishings of the room.
Note:
1. Always place warning signs when stripping and applying seal/finish
2. Classrooms receive 2 coats of seat and 2 coats of finish.
2. Hallways receive 2 coats of seal and 4 coats of finish.
3. Gymnasiums should be treated the same as hallways.
