A Parent’s Guide for the Fourth Grade Learner

Content Standards Curriculum Alignment

 

The Meade School District welcomes your involvement and interest in your child’s educational experiences. The curriculum utilized follows the South Dakota Content Standards and the district course guidelines. The areas of language arts, math, science, social studies, technology, health/physical education, and fine arts (music and art) provide you with an understanding of the student’s learning and instruction. Your input in your child’s education is valued and builds success in our school mission.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Fourth graders will

Ø     evaluate the use of patterns of organizations, literary elements and literary devices within various texts.

Ø     access, synthesize and evaluate information from a variety of sources.

Ø     write effectively and use correct grammar for different audiences and specific purposes.

Ø      learn to identify parts of speech within a sentence.

Ø     use various strategies and techniques to improve writing quality.

Ø     use appropriate structure and sequence to best express ideas and convey information.

Ø     use various presentation strategies to enhance oral communication.

Ø     use appropriate style, organization, and form in technical, transactional, creative, and personal writing.

 

MATH

Fourth graders will

Ø     learn to analyze procedures to transform algebraic expressions.

Ø     use concepts, functions and deductive and inductive reasoning methods to solve problems.

Ø     analyze geometric figures from a variety of perspectives.

Ø     use various units of measure in practical applications.

Ø     analyze the structural characteristics of real numbers.

Ø      apply number operations, multiplication and division facts through 12’s.

Ø      analyze the concept of value and magnitude of numbers.

Ø     analyze and describe the properties and behaviors of relations, functions, and their inverses.

Ø     apply the laws of probability to predict events and outcomes.

 

SCIENCE

Fourth graders will learn

Ø     about how components make up the human body system.

Ø     about ideas and inventions.

Ø     to describe, explain and analyze water, sound, magnetism and electricity.

Ø     to investigate the way sources of energy do work.

Ø     the use of scientific investigations to serve different purposes.

Ø      how the Earth is the solar system.

Ø      to identify habitats and examine how fossils provide evidence of change in organisms.

Ø      weather.

 

SOCIAL STUDIES

Fourth graders will

Ø     define and examine various regions of the United States (focusing on geographical location, opportunities available, natural resources, and population influences) and how these things affected the development of South Dakota.

Ø     explain the impact of people and geographic location on the growth and expansion of South Dakota.

Ø     analyze issues of concern in South Dakota.

Ø     trace the history of South Dakota with emphasis on notable South Dakotans.

Ø     differentiate between state and national boundaries.

Ø     use appropriate maps for a specific purpose.

Ø     use latitude and longitude to locate places on a map grid.

Ø     locate major South Dakota geographical features.

Ø      compare the changing roles and cultures of the individual’s role in various groups.

Ø      analyze the design and purpose of various patriotic celebrations, traditions, customs, and symbols.

Ø      analyze the actions and rights of a responsible citizen.

Ø     identify South Dakota facts and symbols.

Ø     identify examples from South Dakota history of conflicts over rights.

Ø     identify and understand how the government pays for the goods and services it provides.

Ø     explain the role of economics in westward expansion.

Ø     summarize the facts that affect economic systems.

Ø     evaluate the impact geography has on the inhabitants of South Dakota.

 

TECHNOLOGY

Fourth graders will

Ø     use input devices such as mouse and keyboard and output devices such as a printer.

Ø     use a variety of media and technology resources for directed and independent learning activities.

Ø     work cooperatively and collaboratively with peers, family members, and others to use technology in the classroom.

Ø     demonstrate positive social and ethical behaviors when using technology.

Ø      use technology resources for problem solving, communication, and illustration of thoughts, ideas, and stories.

Ø      demonstrate understanding of developmentally appropriate and accurate terminology.

Ø      use developmentally appropriate multimedia resources to support learning.

Ø      create developmentally appropriate multimedia products with support from teachers, family members, and student partners.

Ø      practice responsible use of technology systems and software.

Ø      gather information and communicate with others using telecommunication, with support from teachers, family members, or student partners.

 

HEALTH / PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Fourth graders will

Ø     develop competency in all fundamental movement skills and proficiency in some movement forms.

Ø      participate in physical activity to achieve and maintain a health enhancing level of physical fitness.

Ø     analyze scientific concepts and the principles to understand, evaluate, and enhance movement skill acquisition and performance.

Ø     develop responsible and respectful personal and social behavior in physical activity settings.

Ø     understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, social interaction, and employment.

 

MUSIC

Fourth graders will

Ø      use the performance of music as a means for creative expression and communication by singing and performing on instruments alone and with others – a varied repertoire of music.

Ø      understand music’s relationship to society, the other arts, disciplines outside the arts, history and culture.

Ø      read and notate music.

Ø      communicate their thoughts and ideas through the creation of music by improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments and by composing and arranging music within specified guidelines.

Ø      listen to, analyze, evaluate and describe music and musical performances.

 

ART

Fourth graders will

Ø     explore various media and processes used in the production of visual arts.

Ø     understand selected techniques that give art detail.

Ø     use selected media and processes to express ideas or personal topics of interest.

Ø     describe how visual arts tell stories or express moods or ideas.

Ø     understand the relationship between visual arts, history, culture and society.

 

 

Parents can help enhance learning in all areas by: 

Ø      reading to your child and discussing the main characters, plot, and ending of the story.

Ø      encouraging your child to read a variety of materials such as books, magazines, and newspapers.

Ø      discussing topics that interest your child and researching those topics.

Ø      demonstrating math through money experiences such as counting change, placing money in a piggy bank, and making store purchases.

Ø      using number and letter flashcards at home.

Ø      encouraging your child to write thank you notes and letters.

Ø      encouraging your child to keep a journal.

Ø      giving your child responsibilities.

Ø      helping your child memorize personal information such as his/her birthday, phone number, and address.

Ø      practicing zipping, buttoning, and tying shoes.

Our schools develop in every child the capacity to become a capable, productive citizen.

 

The Meade School District 46-1 testing program is a program designed to assist in meeting the educational needs of all students.

Ø     Stanford/10 Abilities Test (SAT) is a state mandated assessment to determine achievement levels. This assessment is given late March through early April to grades 2, 4, 8, and 11.

Ø    The Otis Lennon Abilities Test is an addition test used to compare abilities with student achievement levels. This test is given in conjunction with the SAT to grades 4 and 8.

Ø     Dakota STEP is a state mandated assessment to determine achievement levels. This assessment is given late March through early April to grades 3-8, and grade 11.

Ø    The Stanford Writing Assessment is a state mandated assessment used to determine writing abilities for grades 5 and 9 given in early October.
