Drugs Most Frequently Used and Dangers of Abuse

Tobacco (Nicotine - cig, butt, smoke, spit, chew, dip)

Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Lessened breathing capacity, decreased sense of taste and smell, persistent cough, high blood pressure, increased heart rate, heart disease, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma. Second-hand smoke endangers the health of non-smokers.

Alcohol (beer, wine, liquor)

Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Impaired coordination, slowed reflexes, hangover, accidents as a result of impaired ability and judgment, heart and liver damage, may be deadly when mixed with other depressants.

Marijuana (pot, dope, grass, weed, herb, hash, joint)

Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Altered perceptions, panic reactions, impaired short-term memory, reduced concentration and coordination, fatigue, reduced immunity to disease. Preliminary studies show chronic lung disease in some users. Note: Over the last decade, the potency of marijuana has greatly increased.

Cocaine (coke, rock, crack, freebase)

Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Heart attack, seizures, high blood pressure, lung damage, severe depression, paranoia, nasal problems, stroke. Injecting cocaine carries risk of AIDS from contaminated needles.

Hallucinogens (acid, LSD, PCP, MDMA, ecstasy, psilocybin, mushrooms, peyote)

Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Altered mood and perceptions; anxiety; nausea; disturbed memory, concentration and judgment; emotional instability; severe disorientation which can lead to serious injuries or death. Overdose can cause psychosis, bizarre behavior, and violence.

Inhalants (gasoline, aerosols, glue, nitrates, paint, Rush)

Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Nausea, dizziness, headaches, lack of coordination, drowsiness, unconsciousness, suffocation, vomiting, damage to brain and central nervous system, heart attack, and sudden death.

Other narcotics (heroin, junk, dope, black tar, opium, China white, Demerol, Dilaudid (D's), morphine, codeine)

Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Drowsiness, insensitivity to pain, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, weight loss, contamination from unsterile needles (hepatitis, AIDS), accidental overdose leading to death.

Stimulants (speed, uppers, crank, Bam, black beauties, crystal, dexies, caffeine, nicotine, cocaine)

Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Rotten teeth, bad breath, acne, high blood pressure, heart attack, weight loss, irritability or anxiety, hyperactivity, fatigue leading to exhaustion, paranoia, depression, confusion, possibility of hallucinations. Dangers of abuse include, but are not limited to: Depressed breating and heartbeat; drowsiness; uncoordinated movement; confused behavior; muscle rigidity; possible death, especially when used in combination with alcohol
