No Child Left Behind

The federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act calls for stronger accountability for states and schools, greater choice for parents and students, and a stronger emphasis on teaching basic subjects such as reading and math. South Dakota's accountability plan serves as the framework for all NCLB efforts in the state.

Each year, the state produces two reports related to student achievement on the Dakota STEP and Dakota STEP-A: Report Card and Assessment Report.

The Report Card represents the scores of students who
were continuously enrolled in a single district from Oct. 1
to the last day of the testing window. This is the information
upon which adequate yearly progress determinations are
based. The Assessment Report represents the scores
of all students in a district or school - not just those who
completed the full academic year.
