A Sturgis Brown High School sophomore is making a difference in the lives of foster families through a recent fundraiser organized for an FCCLA project.
Jocelyn Kiepke was inspired to help after babysitting for a family that fosters children. During one visit, she witnessed a young girl being dropped off at the home with only a single pair of clothes and a small bag of belongings. The experience left a lasting impression on Kiepke and motivated her to find a way to help.
After speaking with the foster mother, Kiepke learned that foster families are often in need of additional pajamas and clothing to stock storage units and sheds that hold supplies for children placed in care. The foster mother provided contact information for Paula, a local supporter who owns storage units and sheds in Spearfish and Rapid City, and offered ideas for fundraising.
For her FCCLA project, Kiepke organized a 50/50 raffle, with proceeds designated to support foster children. The fundraiser raised $183 in one evening. The following day, Kiepke met with Paula and donated the full amount to be used for purchasing clothing and other essential items for the storage units and sheds that serve foster families in the area.
Through her efforts, Kiepke not only completed a class project but also provided meaningful support to children entering foster care with limited personal belongings.
