Aberdeen, S.D. — March 6-7, 2026 — Sturgis Brown High School delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 South Dakota State Debate & Individual Events Tournament in Aberdeen, earning four individual state championships and finishing as the State A Runner-Up overall.

Competing against the top programs from across the state, the Scoopers showcased depth, determination, and excellence across multiple categories, bringing home an impressive collection of medals and accolades.

Leading the charge in Lincoln-Douglas (LD) Debate, Riley Carlson captured the State Championship title, adding to his growing legacy after also winning the International Extemporaneous Speaking state title. Carlson’s repeat championship in International Extemp marks his second consecutive year as state champion in the event. Teammate Hunter Scott also had a strong showing in LD Debate, advancing to the quarterfinals and finishing third overall.

In Informative Speaking, Clara Kruger earned a sixth-place finish, demonstrating poise and preparation among a competitive field of finalists.

The Oratory category proved to be another highlight for Sturgis Brown. Madisyn Richter claimed the State Championship title with a compelling performance, while Kate Bestgen secured a fifth-place finish, adding valuable points to the team’s overall total.

Sturgis Brown also dominated Domestic Extemporaneous Speaking. Hunter Scott rose to the top of the podium as State Champion, adding to his strong tournament performance, while Ian Johnson earned sixth place in the same event.

In International Extemporaneous Speaking, Cade Tallmage finished as State Runner-Up with a second-place medal. Carlson once again stood at the top, earning his second consecutive state title in International Extemp to cap off a remarkable weekend.

With four individual state champions — Riley Carlson (LD Debate and International Extemp), Madisyn Richter (Oratory), and Hunter Scott (Domestic Extemp) — along with multiple additional finalists and medalists, Sturgis Brown’s depth across events propelled the team to an overall State A Runner-Up finish.
