Congratulations to our D.A.R.E. Program graduates!
On May 19th, we celebrated the hard work, growth, and accomplishments of our 5th Grade students as they completed the D.A.R.E. Program. Throughout the program, students learned important lessons about making safe and responsible choices, building confidence, handling peer pressure, and becoming positive leaders in their school and community.

The 5th grade students learned about different forms of energy and exploring how renewable resources, like solar energy, can be used in place of electricity and other nonrenewable resources. To bring their learning to life, students participated in a hands-on activity this week by creating their own solar ovens!

As a reward for their hard work during state testing, our 5th grade students celebrated by releasing butterflies! Throughout their Science unit, students learned about life cycles and had the opportunity to watch the butterflies grow and transform before setting them free.

Our 7th and 8th grade students enjoyed an afternoon of fun as they celebrated the end of the school year, all of their hard work, and their growth on the state test! While rainy weather moved the festivities indoors, it didn’t slow down the excitement.
Students spent time enjoying giant Jenga, cornhole, hacky sack, board games, video games, karaoke, crafts, a movie, and simply hanging out with friends. It was a well-deserved afternoon filled with laughter, memories, and celebration as we wrapped up another successful school year!

Mrs. Dirksen's 7th grade math classes wrapped up the school year with a fun and creative STEM challenge! Students worked together to design and build towers using only spaghetti, tape, and marshmallows. The activity encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, and a little engineering as students tested their designs to see whose tower could stand the tallest. What a great way to end the year with hands-on learning and lots of fun!

Mr. Cass’s 8th grade science classes wrapped up the school year in exciting fashion by building and launching rockets! 🚀
Students selected and purchased the rocket they wanted to build, carefully assembled it by following the provided instructions, and customized their creations with paint colors of their choice. Once the rockets were complete, students placed them on the launch stand and had the chance to push the buttons themselves to send their rockets soaring into the sky!
After launch, the adventure continued as students headed out in search of their rockets after they landed. What a fun, hands-on way to celebrate learning, creativity, and the end of another great school year!

5th and 6th grade students spent the afternoon enjoying some well-deserved fun at the city park! Students spent time hanging out with friends, playing yard games, listening to music, riding bikes on the bike path, and even mountain biking on the trails around Sturgis.
The afternoon was a celebration of school coming to an end, recognizing their hard work throughout the year, and celebrating their growth and success on the state test. We are proud of all they accomplished this year and loved seeing them enjoy time together making memories! 🎉🚴☀️

SWMS students showed their support for the Special Olympics Torch Run by lining the streets and cheering on the torch runners as they passed by! 🔥👏
The excitement and encouragement from our students created an amazing atmosphere, and even more special, some of our own students had the opportunity to carry the torch themselves. It was a memorable experience and a wonderful way to celebrate inclusion, support, and community spirit.
Way to go, SWMS! ❤️🖤

A group of SWMS students enjoyed an afternoon of bowling to celebrate all of their hard work and the school year coming to a close! 🎳👏
The outing provided a fun and relaxed opportunity for students to socialize, build friendships, and enjoy time together outside the classroom. It was especially meaningful as a great social event for some of our quieter and less outgoing students, giving everyone a chance to connect, have fun, and celebrate a successful school year.

SWMS 5th–8th grade students lined the halls to high-five, cheer, and congratulate the SBHS graduating senior class as they walked the halls of SWMS one final time before crossing the stage at high school graduation. 🎓👏
The halls were filled with excitement, smiles, and inspiration as our younger students celebrated this special milestone. Watching the seniors take their final walk reminded our 5th–8th graders that their own journey is just beginning, and they can’t wait for the day when it’s their turn to walk the halls one last time before graduation.
Congratulations, SBHS seniors! We are proud of you and wish you all the best in your next adventure! ❤️🖤

Something to think about.

🎡🎢 Creativity and engineering were on full display in Mrs. Neilan’s STEM class! Students were challenged to design and build a carnival ride that could move in some way, remain stable and safe, carry at least one “rider” (such as a coin), and demonstrate physical science concepts.
From spinning rides to moving attractions, students used teamwork, problem-solving, and innovation to bring their ideas to life. Great job to all of our future engineers and designers! 👏⚙️

Ten SWMS 8th grade Algebra students recently attended the 74th Annual West River Math Contest held on the campus of South Dakota Mines!
This long-standing competition dates back to 1950 and welcomes middle and high school students from across the region to compete in five divisions: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Advanced Math, and Master’s. This year, 21 schools attended with more than 100 students participating.
Faculty members from the Mathematics Department at SD Mines volunteer their time to write and grade the exams. While scores are being tabulated, students enjoy a free lunch and have opportunities to tour the campus, visit the Museum of Geology, and participate in activities at the King Center, including driving a robot!
We are proud of our students for representing SWMS so well! Congratulations to our participants on their outstanding results:
• Brinley Christenson – 8th place
• JoLei Avery – 10th place
• Oliver Voight – 10th place
• Stella Smith – 11th place
