SWMS will be rewarding students who have Perfect Attendance each month. In order to be eligible, students must be in school every day and not have a single tardy for that month. Tracking for Perfect Attendance will start over at the beginning of each month, making EVERY student eligible every month. School activities do NOT count against the student.
On October 1st SWMS recognized 25 - fifth grade students, 21 - sixth grade students, 33 -seventh grade students, and 17 - eight grade students who had perfect attendance. The SWMS PTSA randomly selected one lucky student from each grade to receive a $5 coupon to the SWMS concession stand that was redeemed immediately. Five other students from each grade selected randomly were given the option to choose a gift card from Burger King, McDonalds, Pizza Ranch, or the Sturgis Community Center. All perfect attendance students will be receiving popcorn during their lunch as well. How awesome to have 97 students with no tardies or absences. Thank you to Burger King, McDonalds, Pizza Ranch, the Sturgis Community Center, and the SWMS PTSA for sponsoring this event.

. Sunchokes are rich in inulin, a prebiotic fiber that aids digestion and gut health, and offer various health benefits, including blood sugar control and immune support. They can be eaten raw, pickled, roasted, or pureed and are a versatile ingredient that can be roasted, fried, or used in soups and salads.
Taste & Texture

The Scholastic Excellence Award is given to a student who has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout their middle school career. It is presented last at the Academic and Athletic awards ceremony because Mr. Hedderman believes it it the most prestigious award given. Athletic awards are amazing for, but you won't succeed in life without the academics behind you. This year's winner were: Samatha Tish, Annalee Pierson, Mary Ligtenberg, Macy Secrest, Mirium Kruse, Megan Christians, and Mason Hagen.
Jeff Smit was a student in our building many years ago. Jeff was known for his high academic achievements, involvement in extracurricular activities, and a leader in the classroom and whatever sport he played at the time. Jeff is remembered as a kind, friendly, and compassionate person. He was killed in a car accident his 8th grade year and his parents, Ruth and Keith Smit, remembered him through the Jeff Smit award at the middle school. The criteria for the Jeff Smit award are as follows: a 3-sport athlete, 3.0 min GPA, strong leadership qualities both on and off the field, sincere responsibility to themselves and others, a positive attitude and cooperative spirit, and dependability.
This year's Jeff Smit winners are Fallon Dinkins and Mason Hagen.
Dr. James A. Evans started the Evans Orthodontic Scholar Athlete Award in 1987. Prior to becoming an orthodontist, Dr. Evans taught in the Rapid City public system and coached with Post 22 baseball program for over 40 years. He realized early on the importance of students striving to better themselves through education and athletics and designed this award to recognize both of these attributes. This coveted award is given each year to an 8th grade male and female student from 20 area middle schools that extend from Phillip, SD to Spearfish, SD. The winners are chosen by their teachers and coaches. The selection process is based on which students have tried the hardest to excel in both academics and athletics that year.
This year's Evans Orthodontics scholar-athlete award winners were Ella Walker and Tyce Dunn.
This year's Mark Larschied award recipients for track and field were:
Girls field event: Tenlee Koontz
Girls running: Riley Stacey
Boys running: Dawson Deering
Boay field event: Clay Whitehead
The SWMS track and field had many school records broken this year:
