SWMS held a Veterans Day program on November 11th. In honor of Veterans Day, South Dakota public schools proudly recognize and support the brave men and women who have served in our armed forces. Their sacrifices and dedication have upheld the values and freedoms we cherish, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to protecting our nation.

SWMS was excited to welcome Lieutenant Colonel Christopher A. Long to speak at our Veterans Day program on November 11. Lieutenant Colonel Chris Long is an engineer officer who has served in the South Dakota Army National Guard since 2002. He began his career as an enlisted Soldier serving as a multiple launch rocket system crewmember. He went on to receive his commission by completing Officer Candidate School (OCS) in August 2007. LTC Long has been a combat engineer platoon leader, executive officer, company commander, battalion operations officer, brigade operations officer, brigade deputy commander and currently serves as the South Dakota Army National Guard Recruiting and Retention Battalion commander. He has deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve (2016-2017), Operation Enduring Freedom (2009-2010), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (2004-2005).

Mrs. Skinner's 8th grade social studies students welcomed Chief Petty Officer Ray Cornmesser in to their classroom on Veterans Day. Students learned about life in the Navy and what it was like being a member of the Secret Service.

SWMS staff scare away drugs in support of Red Ribbon Week




Students from Sturgis Williams Middle School attended a leadership conference in Spearfish.

On Friday, October 18th the high school football team recognized our own custodian and coach Rex Schrock for his 34 years of coaching football at various levels in the school. Rex is hanging up his clipboard after this year.


SWMS students were treated to a presentation by the Black Hills Raptor Center on October 17th. Students heard the stories and learned the importance of the birds of prey's existence, how people can help them, and saw first-hand the extraordinary beauty that the birds give to the world.

Congratulations to the girls cross country team on winning the Black Hills Conference. The boys cross country team placed 4th in Conference.
